EGD Scope and Allergist

This has been a day waiting to happen.

My sweet boy has always thrown up.

We have had x rays done to make sure everything developed right.

They just kept telling us they thought it was a bad case of reflux.

He takes medication which helps sometimes and doesn't sometimes.

Finally we were referred to a pediatric gastroenterologist.

The first appointment with him was great.

He said, "I'm pretty sure he has eosiniphilic esophagitis."

I looked more into it and thought for sure that is what my baby has.

It's inflammation of the esophagus and makes them throw up because of the irritation.

It's mainly caused by food allergies.

The only way to know FOR SURE is to do an EGD scope.

They take the scope and go down his esophagus, into the stomach, and into the duodenum(small intestine).

They take biopsies of each little part and test the eosiniphils.

We called and scheduled the scope for July 1st.

I had anxiety over it and him being sedated.

The Dr reassured me it was a simple procedure which lasts only 10 minutes.

We arrived at the hospital at 7:30am.

Got all checked in and they took us back to the pre-operation area.

They handed me that cute little hospital gown, a cap, and socks to put on him.

I knew he wouldn't handle the hat and socks so we did the gown.

SURPRISINGLY he was SO happy.

He had his toys with him, Special Agent OSO was on TV and he just sat in that crib and played.

He was so intrigued with the sound coming out of the remote.

He thought it was a phone and kept putting it to his here saying, "HO!(Hello)"

He gave each toy a turn to listen up to their ears, and Mommy and Daddy.

They came in and gave him the Versed.

He slowly started to sway as he was sitting up, so I layed him down.

He just kept giggling. 

It wasn't his normal giggle, it was a drunk/drugged baby giggle, and it was SO funny.

We couldn't stop laughing.

He just kept laughing at everything we did, until slowly he didn't even have the energy to laugh.

His eyes were so heavy, but he wasn't closing them, then the nurse came and got him and wheeled my baby off in that little crib.

We went out to the waiting area and played games to pass the time.

About 15-20 minutes later the Dr. came out with pictures of everything and 

told us he was 90% sure Ty had EE.

5-10 more minutes went by and they came to get us to go back with him.

They wouldn't let us go back until he was awake.

He was MAD and screaming, "DADDY!"

We had about a day and a half with an angry child, but Saturday he had a 3 hour nap and he was back to his happy self thankfully.

The Results:

The tests came back positive for EE.

In one field area of the microscope he had 54 eosinophils, which is really high.

Normal numbers are below 10.

Treatment:

There is no cure for EE, but it is possible to outgrow it and you just have to maintain it.

The main cause is food allergies, so we had to see the allergist(July 13).

We found out he's allergic to A LOT more than we thought.

Poor baby is going to have a pretty small diet, and he's picky too. 

The first one is right after they did it, the bottom is after about 10-15 minutes.

He's allergic to:

eggs, dairy, beef, lamb, pork, chicken(not bad), wheat, fish, and all nuts.

He didn't have any allergies to fruits or vegetables and he had the tiniest reaction to Turkey, so they think that will be the meat he can have. He wasn't tested for oats, and he eats oatmeal all the time, so we'll probably have to go back to be tested for that.

We have to keep him away from all of these foods for a few months and then we will do another scope to test and see if his esophagus has gotten any better, he will also take a steroid each day that he swallows to help it heal initially. He will take the steroid for 2 months. We hope he will grow out of a lot of this soon.
