{Feb. 1st}
We put Ty to bed and he was feeling just great.
No signs of being sick.
He woke up at about 3am (Wednesday morning) crying and didn't act like he felt very good.
He woke again at 6am and could hardly breath.
Whenever he gets sick, he starts to get wheezy, so I didn't think a lot of it.
I couldn't get anyone to work for me, so I headed to work and Devan stayed home from school.
Devan text me and said Ty wasn't doing good at all and for sure needed to see the Doctor.
I called and left a message with the assistant and they were able to see him at 3:30.
I moved all my patients up so I could try to be out and meet them at the doctor's office.
I thought it would just be a simple breathing treatment and maybe a steroid shot and we'd be on our way.
I got to the Dr. and walked into the room.
Dr. Thompson looked at me and said, "I think he's going to have to go to the hospital."
Ty was already on his second breathing treatment and we couldn't get his oxygen levels above 85(anything below 90 has to be admitted to the hospital).
He said we'd try this treatment and check his levels again....it was 86.
The assistant, Devin, told me to go home and get my stuff and they would call the pediatric floor and have the room ready for me.
I was thinking it would be a quick in and out thing and asked, "What kind of stuff do I need?"
She said, "Well you'll be there at least 24 hours, if not more. So you'll just need stuff for you guys."
I just about lost it, but held my composure, picked up my wheezing boy, and headed to the car to cry.
We got to the hospital and the hooked him right up to an IV...I had to hold him while he screamed and I hated every second of it.
He had steroids going through the IV and an oxygen canula in his nose.
Dev couldn't miss class the next day, so I stayed with Ty by myself.
I slept in the bed with him and he would fall asleep for a little while, then wake up SCREAMING like someone was killing him.
I'd rock him for a while and he's slowly go back to sleep.
They came in the room about every 45 minutes through the night to check his levels and give him another breathing treatment. He hated when they would wake him up.
It was a LONG night.
The next day was rough. He was tired, pumped full of steroids, and ready to leave the hospital.
In the early afternoon he started to freak out and ripped out his IV before I could stop him.
Luckily, the Dr. said we didn't have to put it back in and we could finish on oral steroids.
His body was having a hard time completely weening off of the oxygen and keeping his levels above 90.
He finally started doing well without the canula, so they just had to monitor him for a while with no oxygen before we could be released.
We were lucky to be able to go home on Thursday night and finish things at our house.
They sent us home to do breathing treatments every 3-4 hours and oral steroid 2 times a day(it was disgusting medicine that we had to mix with chocolate syrup to even get it down).
It took about a week to completely get over the wheezing, but we are so thankful things went as well as they did.
The chest x rays came back normal, and RSV came back negative.
It was just rhinovirus(common cold) that attacked his respiratory.
We'll probably always have to keep a breathing machine on hand for anytime he starts to get sick and hopefully we won't end up in the hospital again.
We got to go out and walk the hall.
We found a toy room and started playing, but got kicked out.
I guess respiratory issues aren't allowed in there. oops.
